A Sweet In Home Newborn Session with Twins Boys | Austin Newborn Photographer
Some sessions just stick with you, and this one is definitely going in that category. I got to spend almost two hours with the most wonderful family and their brand new twin boys, Lane and Callen, and I am still thinking about it days later.
If you are a mama or dad expecting twins in the Austin area and you are searching for a newborn photographer who gets what your first few weeks at home with twins actually look like, I hope this story finds you at the right time.
Walking into a house that had it together
From the second I walked in, I could tell this family had a rhythm going. Their home was warm and organized, their two dogs greeted me like old friends, and there was this calm energy running through the whole house even with two newborns in the mix. Anyone who has brought home twins knows that calm does not happen by accident.
Lane and Callen spent time in the NICU after they were born, which meant mom and dad had to learn how to care for premature babies before they even got to do it at home. Feeding tubes, oxygen, teeny bottles, all the information that come with helping two tiny humans grow strong. Watching them feed their boys during our session was honestly the highlight for me. You could see how much they had learned, how in sync they were with each other, and how much love went into every single bottle.
That is the kind of story I love capturing. Not just the pretty portraits, but the real version of what it means to become parents, especially parents of twins who had a journey to get here.
How I approach photographing twins
A question I get a lot from expecting twin parents is how I keep from photographing one baby more than the other. My answer is always the same. I photograph twins the same way I photograph any newborn, I just do it twice with just as much care each time. I try to give equal time and focus between both babies so nobody feels like an afterthought in their own baby book. But I also don’t count images and keep a tally. Each set of newborn twins are their own story. Rarely perfectly balanced, but always with the upmost attention.
With twins there really is no predicting how a session will go. It is double the naps, double the diaper changes, double the unexpected moments. Lane and Callen made it easy though. They ebbed and flowed together beautifully, and we wrapped the whole session up in under two hours, which for twins is basically a personal record.
The little details that made this home so special
This family had the coziest reading nook, styled with so much heart, and it became one of my favorite spots to shoot in all morning. Little touches like that tell me everything about a family before we even start. You can feel how much love is already living in those walls, waiting for two little boys to grow into it.
